Basically, I have in my .bashrc a line that changes the PS1 environment
variable. When I do M-x ansi-term, the terminal doesn't seem to respect
this and the prompt is very long. Any advice?

We need more informations:
1. post your PS1
2. did you try with emacs -Q
3. what is your emacs version ?
