I am wondering why the *.ml file extension is reserved for Lisp files
by default, I assume there is a historical reason for this but I would
have expected it to be associated to a Standard ML mode or OCaml mode.

Dunno whether or why it would be the reason
for it to default to Lisp files by default in
Emacs, but (IIRC) "ml" was the file extension
for MockLisp files in Gosling Emacs.

You might want to `M-x report-emacs-bug` and request for it to be
removed, BTW. I can't remember ever seeing a `.ml` file that contained
anything resembling Lisp, so that practice seems to predate my use of
Emacs, which started around 1992.
