I would like to use recentf on computers on which I have different home
directories. So, I would like file names to be saved relative to my current
home directory rather than fully expanded. Any advice?

Customize `recentf-filename-handlers'. This should get you something like

  '(recentf-filename-handlers (quote (abbreviate-file-name)))

in your .emacs.
