is there a simple way to write subscripted or superscripted characters in
plain text format, i.e. no latex, lisp or anything like that?
something beyond iso-transl-superscript-1/2/3.

In Unicode -- yes, there is a way. A simple one? Comparatively.

Install Mule-UCS-0.84 (you could try another version, of course), open a
file in utf-8 encoding, type M-x insert-ucs-character<RET>178<RET> and here
it is -- superscript 2. 178 is the decimal codepoint of the character
SUPERSCRIPT TWO.

For codepoints (character codes) of super/subscripted characters see
http://www.unicode.org/charts/PDF/U2070.pdf
