Just wanted to say "Emacs is Awesome"
So often I want to do something. Today's example is to sort a list of files in a Dired window by the path. I think to myself "Too bad I can't just click on "File" and have it sort". But... I try it anyway and TaaDaa!!! it does exactly what I was hoping for.

Since you mention dired, I would encourage you to try the wonderful
dired-details and dired-details+ packages by Drew Adams. They are
available on the emacswiki or from the following git mirrors:
git://github.com/emacsmirror/dired-details.git
git://github.com/emacsmirror/dired-details-plus.git

Thanks for the plug, but actually dired-details.el was written by Rob Giardina.
I wrote only dired-details+.el.
