Is there a way to refresh GNus for new messages -- like how Gmail refreshes
the page every few minutes -- so that one does not have to get in and out of
a news or user group.

Thanks,

Rajiv

See the Info node (Gnus)Daemons.

;; Automate the fetching of mail.
(require 'gnus-demon)

;; Check for new mail once in every this many minutes.
(gnus-demon-add-handler 'gnus-demon-scan-news 5 nil)

In a group, you can do M-g:

,----
| ESC g runs the command gnus-summary-rescan-group
| which is an interactive compiled Lisp function in `gnus-sum'.
| (gnus-summary-rescan-group &optional ALL)
|
| Exit the newsgroup, ask for new articles, and select the newsgroup.
`----

Albert.
