I have no root access to a computer where I have just installed iSpell to my
home dir. Is there someway to make emacs know this nondefault dir where I
have installed iSpell to?

You can change your PATH so that `ispell`, in a shell, executes your
ispell, or change the variable `ispell-program-name'.
