Hard to say why it fails. I would need the Tramp buffer, and the Tramp
debug buffer (it is described in the manual how to setup).

That is the default vc checking. If you don't use vc at all, you might
disable it via

  (setq vc-handled-backends nil)

That shall improve your performance in general.
