Unfortunately it doesn't work either:

(defun my-ps-right-footer ()
  (interactive)
  (let ((my-page-number (read-number "page number? ")))
    (setq ps-print-footer t)
    (setq ps-right-footer (list my-page-number))
    )
  )

produces a ps print error.  I can't find a solution.  Thanks for furhter
suggestions.
