gutter region on both sides of screen

I can't remember, or find, what emacs calls the small border on both
sides of the screen.  

I'm trying to turn it off, but can't find it in any settings.

Help?

Oops, on emacs 21.3.1, I have fringe, but no 'fringe-mode'.  Any ideas
on how to turn it off there?

(No possibility at all of updating to a new emacs)

Hmm, I'm using emacs 21.3.1, which has 'fringe', but no 'fringe-mode'.
Any ideas how to turn it off there?

Emacs 21 introduced fringe as a feature, but AFAIK provided no way to turn it
off. This is a good example of how not to add a new feature. ;-)

In Emacs 21, there is no function or variable with `fringe' in its name, and I
know of no function or variable that can be used to remove the fringe.

You can customize the face `fringe', to (for example) make its background color
the same as the frame's background color - that will make the fringe seem to
disappear, at least: `M-x customize-face RET fringe RET'.

The best suggestion, if it's feasible for you, is to upgrade to a more recent
Emacs release. Emacs 22 is quite stable. Emacs 23 was just released recently.
Starting with Emacs 22, it is easy to wear no fringe. ;-)

It's actually not the color of the fringe that bothers me, it is the
little 'wrap' characters that I don't like.  I'm looking at a file where
the lines are about 500 char long, and the little clockwise and
counterclockwise symbols that tell me the line is wrapping bother me.
They are visual nose that I don't need.  I _know_ the line is wrapping.

I can't find where to turn those off either, or what the glyphs are
called.

Maybe someone else can help; I don't know the answer.

A quick search through the Emacs-Lisp source code for `glyph' and `wrap' (and of
course `fringe') didn't turn up anything, and I don't have a copy of the C
sources for Emacs 21.

(In more recent Emacs versions, much of the fringe stuff (e.g.
`define-fringe-bitmap' is in C code, and most of the rest is in `fringe.el' or
`menu-bar.el'.)

No doubt someone can help with more info.

I'd still say try to upgrade to Emacs 22 or 23. Or upgrade to Emacs 20 (yes, I
mean UPgrade ;-) ).

This is probably the simplest way:

    (push '(continuation nil nil) fringe-indicator-alist)

This version modifies the alist in-place:

    (setcdr (assq 'continuation fringe-indicator-alist)
            '(nil nil))

There is no `fringe-indicator-alist' in Emacs 21.

In Emacs 21, there are no variables or functions with `fringe' in their name.

That wasn't intentional.  Emacs 21 completely changed the display
engine, which led to a very long development cycle and an extremely
long pretest.  The pressure was high to release Emacs 21.1, so some
development plans never materialized.
