Hi, my name is Riccardo. My question is about enabling pdfLaTeX mode
while I open a .tex file.
As in the wiky-emacs I added this to my .emacs:
(setq TeX-PDF-mode t)
but when I open a .tex nothing appens, pdfLaTeX is not enabled.
Do you have any suggestion?
Best
Riccardo
P.S. I work with ubuntu 10.04, emacs 23.2.

See the documentation:
,----[ C-h v TeX-PDF-mode RET ]
| TeX-PDF-mode is a variable defined in `tex.el'.
| Its value is nil
|
| Automatically becomes buffer-local when set in any fashion.
| This variable is safe as a file local variable if its value
| satisfies the predicate `TeX-booleanp'.
|
| Documentation:
| Non-nil if Tex-Pdf mode is enabled.
| Use the command `TeX-PDF-mode' to change this variable.
|
| You can customize this variable.
|
| [back]
`----
The variable is buffer-local, that means you have to set in the relevant
buffer or you use
(setq-default TeX-PDF-mode t)
to change the default value.

What do you expect to happen?
Do you know AUCTeX? No? Then get to know it! It has knowledge of file-local variables and also has some mechanism to make a distinction between plain TeX and LaTeX files (and also for LuaTeX and XeTeX and ConTeXt) and choose the proper mode and engine.

Then you need a pretty good explanation why it fails for you!
Are you loading AUCTeX and Preview-LaTeX at all? The documentation recommends:
(load "auctex.el" nil t t)
(load "preview-latex.el" nil t t)
which I put into the system's init file, site-start.el. It should also work from your init file. You can check in *Messages* whether these file were loaded.
