i meet the following error when i compiled emacs in winXP.
Essential Lisp files seem to be missing. you should either do make bootstrap
or create 'lisp/abbrev.elc' somehow
Nmake : fatal error U1077: 'if' : return code '0xffffffff' Stop

It's written in the docs that the make target for GNU Emacs from CVS is
bootstrap. So make nmake make the target bootstrap! It will take more
time because every Elisp file will be byte-compiled.

Is that the CVS version of Emacs? If so, then you indeed need to run
"nmake bootstrap", like the message says.
