Some stuff behaves different than in your tests (the majority,
actually). Try this:
#+begin_src emacs-lisp
(global-set-key
[f1]
(defun test ()
(interactive)
(let (;; (inhibit-message t)
)
(message "Something"))))
#+end_src
Now try f1 with and without the `inhibit-message' binding.
Invoking commands doesn't print a return value. And invoking commands
is what you do all the time.
