Oh, of course I've forgotten the most obvious part, i.e., frame 0:
(gdb) pp string
"--"
(gdb) pp font_object
#<font-object "-JB -JetBrains Mono-normal-normal-normal-*-15-*-*-*-m-0-iso10646-1">
And indeed, the mode-line in a Gnus Summary buffer starts with "U:---".
--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
mode-line-format is a variable defined in ‘C source code’.
Its value is
("%e" mode-line-front-space mode-line-mule-info mode-line-client mode-line-modified mode-line-remote mode-line-frame-identification mode-line-buffer-identification " " mode-line-position
(vc-mode vc-mode)
" " mode-line-modes mode-line-misc-info mode-line-end-spaces)
Local in buffer *Summary nnimap+Fastmail:mailinglists/help-gnu-emacs*; global value is
("%e" mode-line-front-space mode-line-mule-info mode-line-client mode-line-modified mode-line-remote mode-line-frame-identification mode-line-buffer-identification " " mode-line-position
(vc-mode vc-mode)
" " mode-line-modes mode-line-misc-info mode-line-end-spaces)
