My four year-old daughter and I were watching "Ice Age" when I asked
her, "do you think those are supposed to be wildebeests or gnus?"
"Guh-noos," she answered, just as I had mis-pronounced it, "do you
want to hear the bad news, daddy?"
True story.
Maybe it would be less off-topic on the Gnus newsreader list.

Hi there,
I have this error after issuing M-x gnus:
nntp (news) open error >>>(error Unknown host "news")
native gnus.el is used.
I tried example from FAQ with the same result.
gnus folder in PATH.
And I do not have paths.el may it be the case?
May you help me?
Regards,
Igor

Is the news source a valid nntp source? Can you paste the relevant
contents of your ~/.gnus?
For example, I use:
(setq gnus-select-method '(nntp "news.gmane.org"))
or
(setq gnus-secondary-select-methods
(nntp "news.gmane.org"
(nntp-stream ssl)
(nntp-server-port 563))))

That would indeed be useful.

The example is missing a quote and is closing one more bracket than it
should. Also I could not find `nntp-stream' and `nntp-server-port' in
(info "gnus"); and in my configuration I actually use `nntp-port-number'
and `nntp-open-connection-function' set to `nntp-open-ssl-stream'.
(setq gnus-secondary-select-methods
'(nntp "news.gmane.org"
(nntp-open-connection-function nntp-open-ssl-stream)
(nntp-port-number 563)))

It sounds like `gnus-select-method' isn't set.
For example, I have:
(setq gnus-select-method '(nntp "Aioe.org"))
See the documentation for `gnus-select-method' (it is
a variable) for how to use it and what to put there.
Then you can complement it by using
`gnus-secondary-select-methods' if you in addition to
news also would like to read mail and RSS with Gnus.

Yes, but why does it have to be so complicated? To be
secure (with SSL)?
(setq gnus-select-method '(nntp "Aioe.org"))
(setq gnus-secondary-select-methods '((nnml "")
(nntp "news.gwene.org")))
The fun and easy way!

Yeah, you used to have to do stuff like that. These days it's common
for NNTP servers to support STARTTLS, and Emacs will upgrade to an
encrypted connection automatically.
