You missed reading the documentation of `font-lock-add-keywords', which
lead me to the following version.
(font-lock-add-keywords 'emacs-lisp-mode
'(("\\_<\\*\\(?:\\w\\|\\s_\\)+\\*\\_>" . 'font-lock-warning-face)))
