Examples of =E2=80=9Csmall=E2=80=9D community-based projects include disroo= t.org, weho.st, and teknik.io. Other providers worth looking into may be Tutanota, ProtonMail, or FastMail. Ultimately, though, I=E2=80=99d recomme= nd running your own if you can. Container-based solutions like Mailu [1] or mailcow [2] with sane defaults could be very decent starting points.
