You can omit andrew> "user@" if you want to login as yourself. An alternative solution is to use TRAMP instead of FTP. You can configure TRAMP so that you can edit files under different uids on the local (and remote) system. I use this when I want to edit a config file owned by root, but don't want to exit my normal user session. A description of how to do this is in the TRAMP manual.
