spell-checker compatible with LaTeX?

spell-checker compatible with LaTeX?

Hello,

I'm trying to figure out what's the current status of spell checker
for emacs. In particular, I"m looking for one that's understand LaTeX
and compatible with Auctex. I did some searches on web, but still
can't figure out if anything is available at all. I'm runing emacs/
auctex under Windows XP.

Thanks, and another question. I've just looked at "flyspell". Is that
another package, or it uses existing ones (e.g., Ispell)?

It just keeps your computer's CPU(s) busy trying to find and highlight  
words you did not write correctly. Some MS Nonsense... (I never looked  
at it. I neither like flying. Bike riding fits me.)

I have it turned on in all my Tex mode buffers (and all modes that are
derived from Text mode, like Mail mode where I'm typing this), since
many years ago, and I never regretted it.  It catches my typos and
does not slow down typing too much.

Seems like bikespell isn't compatible with LaTeX.

ispell has -t ("The input file is in TeX or LaTeX format.", according to
its manpage).

But its effect is to skip any word with a backslash on it. That might be
okay with commands. But some people use commands to write chars with
accents, and words with those won't be checked.

At least in the standard LaTeX mode of emacs, ispell (e.g. ``M-x
ispell-buffer'') skips commands.

fly-spell is a wrapper around ispell-mode for checking
the spelling of each word as the cursor moves off it.
ispell-mode can use any spell check program that is
compatible with ispell; Aspell and hunspell are commonly used.
This is done by setting ispell-prog-name.

Flyspell also has flyspell-prog-mode. This uses information
from the major-mode to indicate where the strings and
comments are, and only flyspells them. If ispell-comments-and-strings
works in LaTeX mode, then flyspell-prog-mode should work.
(I've never used LaTeX, so can't say for sure).

Thanks, I'll take a closer look at it. Seems like the best way for
flyspell to work with LaTeX is to rely on AUCTEX/EMACS to do the
lexical analysis to determine whether it's dealing with a text or
comments or math expression (AUCTEX does it remarkably well).

If you only need a real-time spell-checker (à la flyspell-mode) you can
use wcheck-mode [1]. It aims to be very much configurable and compatible
with "everything". You can use it with any command-line (spell-)checker
tool. To make it compatible with LaTeX (Auctex) I use this
configuration:

 wcheck-read-or-skip-faces
 '((emacs-lisp-mode read font-lock-comment-face font-lock-doc-face)
   (message-mode read nil message-header-subject message-cited-text)
   (latex-mode read                     ; "read" the following faces
               nil                      ; nil means normal text

               font-latex-sectioning-2-face
               font-latex-sectioning-3-face
               font-latex-sectioning-4-face
               font-latex-bold-face

So in latex-mode only normal text (nil), section headers etc. are read.
All other faces are skipped.

Thanks a lot. I'll take a look at it. I've just noticed new release of
Auctex became available (a couple of weeks ago actually), so I'm gonna
install and test that one first, then try WcheckMode. And, of course,
thanks for the configuration sample. That will be very helpful. My
knowledge of Lisp is (nil).  :-)
