believe or not, I googled for this, I C-h v "what ever string I could
think of to find out" for no avail

You want to do 
M-x emacs-version
?
You find it by C-h f emacs-v[tab]

Others have answered; let me just point out that C-h a can often be
more productive.  In this case, C-h a version RET.

I'm probably riding this thread to death ..., anyway I learned:

The `version' command is an alias for `emacs-version'

and here's another method for the command line (in the unlikely case
that no Emacs is currently running):

$ emacs --version
