Hi,

I just turned my computer on today, and realized that my emacs no
longer worked.

When I start it, just as habitually, I encounter the *Messages*
buffer, with some unuseful stuff, and then

==
An error has occured while loading `/home/merciadriluca/.emacs':

Symbol's value as variable is void: \211PNG
==

The result of debug-init is

==
Debugger entered--Listp error: (void-variable \211PNG)
         eval-buffer(#<buffer *load*<2>> nil
         "/home/merciadriluca/auctex-11.86/auctex.el" nil t) ; Reading
         at buffer position 5
         load-with-code-conversion("/home/merciadriluca/auctex-11.86/auctex.el"
         "/home/merciadriluca/auctex-11.86/auctex.el" nil t)
         load("~/auctex-11.86/auctex.el" nil t t)
         eval-buffer(#<buffer *load*> nil "/home/merciadriluca/.emacs"
         nil t) ; Reading at buffer position 358
         load-with-code-conversion("/hoe/merciadriluca/.emacs"
         "/home/merciadriluca/.emacs" t t)
         load("~/.emacs" t t)
         #[nil "^H\205\276^@ \306=[crap ...]" [init-file-user
         systemt-ype user-init-file-1 user-inot-file otherfile source

         "^\\.emacs\\(\.elc?\\)?$" "~/.emacs" [...]
         command-line()

Any idea?

Thanks.

[...]

I consider it most likely that your file
"/home/merciadriluca/auctex-11.86/auctex.el" has been overwritten with a
graphics file, due to user error or file system corruption.

This is the case. Its content was like a binary content. Really
weird. I replaced it, and everything now works. Thanks, David!
