John Paul Wallington <jpw@gnu.org> burbled:

                                 ^
Oh boy! should be quoted, like so:

(add-hook 'lisp-mode-hook
          (lambda ()
            (set (make-local-variable 'lisp-indent-function)
                 'common-lisp-indent-function)))

I hadn't noticed before because the default value of
`lisp-indent-function' is `lisp-indent-function' !
