Dear reader,

How can I arrange for having emacs starting up WITH the instructions
that I would like to have `font-lock-mode' switched `ON' AND that the
meta key is the `ALT' key?

 Thanks for your response,

Ytsen de Boer

For the former, I suggesting typing M-x customize-variable RET
global-font-lock-mode RET. Don't forget to save your changes.

How to tell Emacs that the meta key is the Alt key depends on your
system. Please provide details. Unix with X11? Unix without X11?
DOS?

For this one, you can simply add

(global-font-lock-mode 1)

to your .emacs
