This won't work, because remove-hook actually modifies the outside
variable foo-hook.


Write simply:

(let ((foo-hook (remove 'bar foo-hook)))
   ...)

Or:

(let ((foo-hook foo-hook))
  (remove-hook 'bar 'foo-hook)
  ...)

This doesn't violate the abstraction of remove-hook.
