I've got display of UTF-8 encoded files _within_ emacs working just
fine, but when I try to copy/paste between emacs and gnome-terminal,
gedit, gaim &c. I get gobbledygook. Any ideas? Right now I set up
Unicode with this:
(set-language-environment "UTF-8")
(set-buffer-file-coding-system 'utf-8)
(setq locale-coding-system 'utf-8)
(set-terminal-coding-system 'utf-8)
(set-keyboard-coding-system 'utf-8)
(set-selection-coding-system 'utf-8)
(prefer-coding-system 'utf-8)
LANG=en_GB.UTF-8
LC_MONETARY=en_US

I have the following in my .emacs. You may wish to experiment with the
values.
(setq x-select-request-type '(UTF8_STRING COMPOUND_TEXT TEXT STRING))
