I just found an incredible tool that can be invoked from Emacs (as any shell command), and be used to take screenshots of Emacs (and anything else) running in the console. It is called fbgrab, and is used like this: `fbgrab dump.png' (I guess "fb" is for "frame buffer"). The tool is (at least) in my Debian "sid" repositories, and it worked without the slightest of tweak.
