My emacs is not showing any normal (ASCII) characters but only rectangles.
The startup message comes normally but anything else I type or which emacs
displays in the echo area is only rectangles!!
Whether this happened when I upgraded from ubuntu dapper to edgy or due to
something else I am not sure.
Any clues what I can correct??

Search for this in the eMail archives. It's a debian problem with
uncommon places to install fonts in. I wonder why these debian based
or derived Linux distributions can't handle their stuff properly ...

The relevant link on the ubuntu forums is
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=285304 Ubuntu forums emacs/X link
Giving it here because others too are having this problem. Its hard to
believe that we are in an age when *nix can can be shipped without X windows
and emacs configured properly

I think this was specific to ubuntu. I've certainly had no problems
with Debian Testing. I also thought it was a problem with a
pre-release version of ubuntu and not an "official" release, in which
case minor glitches like this are to be expected.
