Hello.

I hope this is right news group I have problems with x-symbol package
under emcs 23. (Yes I know that x-symbol is rather old.)

The problem seams to be that x-symbol uses simple strings to do the font
selection and the emacs 23 font selection function expect some font
object. Does any one know a bug fix?

I am not an expert in emacs lisp. Can any one give me a some link
to exlanations what was changed in the font selction scheme of emacs? A
tip how I could get emacs to give me a more precise error messages? I even
dont get a line number.

Thank you for your help
 	Andreas Klein

Yes. Don't use it in GNU Emacs 23. GNU Emacs 23 can display all
Unicode characters. It might become necessary to create a fontset...

x-symbol is much more than character display. It contains elaborate
input methods/menus, conversion on read/write also for latin1 characters
and a few other things. The main permanent productivity advantage
really is the input method thingy. There have been feature requests by
users to its author about getting those input methods without the actual
conversion and display.

That does not help me. I use X-Symbol not for displaying exotic
characters, but for the input helps in TeX and for the nice feater that I see all the
exotic charaters, but the TeX-file contains only ASCII. I have found no
good replacement for that in other packages.

For the moment I stay with Emacs 22.

Best wishes
