Why wouldn't FreeBSD use GPL code? They use GCC, right? Doesn't OpenBSD do that too? And FYI, GTK is not only for GNOME. It's a standard toolkit on GNU systems. Many non-GNOME programs use it. You obviously know this as you are using XFce, another GTK desktop environment. I don't argue that Emacs should be GTK only, but I do think that GTK is a great step forward for Emacs.
