Say I follow a symbol with "M-." that was generated with the etags
command. How do I go back after following the tag?

How about reading the function documentation?


C-h k M-. 

gives me:

[...]

A marker representing the point when this command is invoked is pushed
onto a ring and may be popped back to with M-*.
Contrast this with the ring of marks gone to by the command.
