In my mail groups, I have to tried to jump to the last article by
variously pressing 'l' and 'C-u l' but neither of them seem to work on a
reliable basis. Either the cursor stays where it is (oldest mail) or it
opens the oldest mail. Using the menu option also does nothing.
What's going on?

Yes, I wondered about that. I posted this twice in error, in the second
posting I suspected 'last' didn't mean most recently arrived. How can I
get my cursor to do jump to 'most recently arrived article'? C-<End>
jumps to the end of the buffer, which is not quite what I want.

I don't know. I think you have to write it yourself. Hm. Maybe invoke
gnus-summary-goto-article on (last gnus-newsgroup-articles)?
Does this work?
M-: (gnus-summary-goto-article (car (last gnus-newsgroup-articles))) RET
If so, make a small Lisp function for this.

I've no idea, but a buffer appeared with this in. The word 'error' makes
me think not. ;-) But I'll try and write a little function, it'll be
good practice for me anyway!
Debugger entered--Lisp error: (void-variable gnus-newsgroup-articles)
(last gnus-newsgroup-articles)
(car (last gnus-newsgroup-articles))
(gnus-summary-goto-article (car (last gnus-newsgroup-articles)))
eval((gnus-summary-goto-article (car (last gnus-newsgroup-articles))))
eval-expression((gnus-summary-goto-article (car (last gnus-newsgroup-articles))) nil)
call-interactively(eval-expression)

Were you in a summary buffer when you typed this? Hm. When I do C-h
v gnus-newsgroup-articles RET in a summary buffer, I get some
documentation.
