When you run "./configure ..other.args..", then it will print at the end which settings it is going to use. Did it print that it will use X11? >>From the same shell where you type "emacs", can you start, say, "xterm" there? Maybe Emacs was not allowed to connect to the X display. -- This line is not blank.
