When you run "./configure ..other.args..", then it will print at the
end which settings it is going to use.  Did it print that it will use
X11?

>From the same shell where you type "emacs", can you start, say,
"xterm" there?  Maybe Emacs was not allowed to connect to the X display.

Can not get 21.3 in window mode

Hi,

I downloaded and compiled and installed Emacs 21.3 under SuSE Linux 8.0. 
Everything went fine, except that starting emacs from the commandline 
results in the no window (-nw) mode by default. 

Compilation was done with x support on. However, I could not get further.
What do I need to do (or where can I look up what to do) to start emacs
in the X mode by default?
