Ah, there is a variable dired-recursive-deletes. I just "emacs -q -no-site-file" on Emacs 21.3, then set dired-recursive-deletes to top, then hit d x in dired on a nonempty directory with subdirs, and lo! it was deleted. -- ~/.signature
