I have been away from my computer for a few days. On returning I was looking forward to reading the replies to a message I sent a few days ago. Unfortunately I can on see the last 20 or so messages sent. How can I read older messages?

This depends on the program you're using.
In case it's Gnus, you might be successful to use C-u 42 RET on the
group name to read the last 42 messages.
