Does the problem happen when you invoke Emacs as "emacs -Q"?  If it
doesn't, then something in your .emacs init file might be the culprit.

If the problem happens in "emacs -Q" as well, type

  M-x set-variable RET debug-on-error RET t RET

then invoke Ediff again.  You should get a Lisp backtrace in a
separate window.  Post that backtrace here.
