I use Rmail with no problems whatsoever, including UTF-8 encoded
Subject lines.

Which version of Emacs do you have?  If it's 24.x, then please provide
some details about the problems.  My guess would be that something in
your ~/.emacs, which is there from the old times, is causing you
grief.

If your Emacs is older than 24.x, I suggest to upgrade first.
