Maybe you tried M-0 on a text-mode frame ("emacs -nw")? Or maybe your meta key is customized in some weird way? By default, M- is the same as "C-u ". I used M-0 because it is easier to type M-t afterwards: you don't have to move your finger from the Meta key.
