I've (finally) set up Gnus to properly grab and store my mail.
I'm now running into a problem trying to configure my SMTP server. I
need to log into my server but the following doesn't work:

,----
| (setq send-mail-function 'smtpmail-send-it)
| (setq message-send-mail-function 'smtpmail-send-it)
| (setq smtpmail-smtp-server "mail.host.com")
| (setq smtpmail-auth-credentials
| '(("host.com" "25" "username" "password")))
| (setq smtpmail-debug-info t)
| (setq smtpmail-debug-verb t)
`----

I end up getting something that looks like:

550 5.7.1 <somebody@somewhere.com>... Relaying denied

The entire text of the message is at the end of the mail. What am I
doing wrong?

Thanks in advance,

Dan

The smtpmail docs says that the port can be either a string or a
number, but the code wants a number. So change this:

 (setq smtpmail-auth-credentials
       '(("host.com" "25" "username" "password")))

into this:

 (setq smtpmail-auth-credentials
       '(("host.com" 25 "username" "password")))

and things will probably start working.

I also have this line in my customizations:

 (setq smtpmail-smtp-service 25)

If this doesn't help, post here the entire contents of the SMTP
session buffer.

If a string works (don't know) it would probably have to be "smtp" and
not "25".

Hmm... strange. What version of Emacs is that?

It looks like smtpmail doesn't recognize the authentication methods
supported by your SMTP server: it should have issued the "AUTH LOGIN"
command before "ONEX", but didn't. I wonder why...

Btw, are you sure your mail server indeed supports connections from
outside its domain? It's possible that it doesn't, in which case
"Relaying denied" is expected: it tells you that it doesn't want to be
used as a mail relay (malicious hackers abuse that to send spam).

Yup, I use my mail server all the time through evolution. And
I really want to switch to Gnus but *absolutely* need to be able to
send mail.

Thanks for your help,

-Dan

Ah, that explains it: Emacs 21.3 does not support AUTH in SMTP. You
need the version of smtpmail.el from the Emacs CVS.
