Emacs-snapshot insists that tab is 0x0009

Hello all,

my emacs-snapshot-gtk insists on inserting a 0x0009 when I press ctrl-q
tab. The character is displayed as "^@" followed by a tab.

This does not happen with the text-only display (-nw) nor with any of
the other emacsen I have. I tried emacs-snapshot -q --no-site-file, but
it does not make a difference.

Any ideas how I can get a plain tab?

quoted-insert is not the way to go if you want to bypass emacs' smart
indentation mode and insert a real tab. Use tab-to-tab-stop (M-i)
instead. 

You *can* get quoted-insert to work like M-i if you (setq
overwrite-mode 'overwrite-mode-textual), at least in emacs-snapshot 
24.0.50.1.

This "snapshot" is now half a year old. It's ripe compost now. (And in  
the Xaw3d variant on Mac OS X 10.5.8 I can easily insert C-q TAB as a  
real TAB.)
