I will be starting C++ at my school. I moved to linux about 4 months
ago. I have been using Pico, but have decided to give Emacs a shot as
my editor for C++. The idea is that I will be using the console for
most things; I will be using a very very old laptop, that Emacs will
run on with no problem it seems. I ordered the Learning GNU Emacs book
from O'rielly, and would like comments or opinions or whatever from
y'all. I will be learning C++ from the very beginning. The teacher
wants to use Visual C++, but I have a ancient machine, I run Linux,
and if I have to, I'll just email source to myself at school. Am I
making a mistake choosing to learn Emacs to learn C++? I have heard it
refered to as a dinosaur whose time has come and gone, but I can't
really run X well. So, I have to broaden my mind and leave
preconceived ideas and notions behind.

Many thanks,

Cecil

Learning Emacs and learning C++ are pretty much independent. At
least unless you use GCC and glibc, in which case it is worth noting
that Emacs' built-in info reader is one of the handiest tools for
accessing info pages (use C-h S with the cursor on a symbol to find
its info page). It is also worth noting that the gdb command in
Emacs is quite handy for source code debugging.

Gone? Hardly. It's still quite the killer.

if your mind broad enough, you do not need to leave anything behind.

Emacs is an excellent tool to use while learning to code c++. There is a
very real learning curve, one that I am quite sure I am still scaling
myself, but, once you get going, you will find out that you have a very
powerful editor at your command.

It is my choice of editors for coding c++, perl, php and the like. I
really like the fact that is can be very easy to customize once you learn
how the .emacs file works.

Try it out- it is my opinion that you will learn c++ better by using Emacs
than by using the Visual c++ editor.
