annoying menu in minibuffer for selecting input charset (?)

hello

I'm running emacs 22.1 (standard 'csw'-configuration from
blastwave.org) on solaris (5.10) where
the 'locale' is set generally to 'en_US.UTF-8'. Whenever I run emacs I
have an annyoing 'menu' in the minibuffer
where I can switch the input charset.

I can choose from 'English/European', Cyrillic, Greek, Arabic, Hebrew,
Unicode Hex, Unicode Octal, and Lookup.

The possibility to change the input charset is nice, but the annyoing
thing is that the menu hides the rest of the minibuffer messages.
E.g., whenever I use a M-x I have to manually resize the minibuffer in
order to see what I type.

How can get rid of this menu?

Any hints are welcomed.

What annoying 'menu' is that? please be specific and tell the details
of what you see.  (I don't see any menu when I run Emacs 22.1.)

Also, does this happen when you start Emacs with "emacs -Q"?  If the
problem disappears in "emacs -Q", there's something in your .emacs or
the system-wide site-start.el file that causes this annoyance.

In the minibuffer I see the words "glish/European]" (the font-size is
bigger than in other parts and the font-weight is bold. The start of
the string "[English" lies outside the emacs windows and is not
visible). When I click into the minibuffer a small window pops up
showing the 8 entries.

The annoyance is that I don't see any minibuffer 'messages' when I'm
e.g. looking for a file (hitting C-x f, entering the beginning of a
file name and then hitting TAB, or hitting M-x and starting to enter a
command), The regular minibuffer messages appear above the menu and I
have first to resize first the minibuffer before I see what I typed
(the minibuffer is only 1 line height and does not automatically
expand).

'-Q' doesn't remove the menu.

I'm seeing the same problem with emacs version 22.1.1, but it only
appeared in the last week right after an update to the latest version
of Solaris 10 (to version " 5.10 Generic_120012-14 i86pc i386 i86pc"
according to uname -a).  I would be very interested in a solution to
this problem also.

Very strange.  I cannot find in the stock Emacs distribution any files
that could result in the display shown in your screen shots.  Maybe
I'm blind?

What OS is that, and what does "M-x emacs-version RET" say?
Also, what are the values of `system-configuration' and
`system-configuration-options'?

I think the annoying menu you are seeing is the one described here:
http://developers.sun.com/global/products_platforms/jds/reference/faqs/input-mode-window.html
as the "Language Input Mode Status Area Window".  It went away for me
when I switched locale from "en_US.UTF-8" to "C".

This is it! JDS is the culprit! (btw: JDS sucks anyway, but that's
another story...)
I could get rid of the 'Input Method Status' like this (I didn't
wanted to change my locale, so I choose to remove the menu):
 'Preferences' -> 'Desktop Preferences' -> 'Input Methods': Then tab
'General', section 'Display Input Method status': I switched the value
for 'Placement' to 'Gnome Panel'.
