I run an emacs server in my Gnome session startup. This works fine
except for the occasional time
I try and log out of the session. This usually takes a while as Gnome
tries to get all the open applications
to shutdown before logging off. Is there some way I can get emacs to
trap the session manager message
and respond appropriately?

Why not tell your PC to fall asleep (hibernate, ACPI S-4 status,
suspend to disk)?

Likely, the session manager sends a D-Bus message
(org.gnome.SessionManager). With Emacs 23 you can handle this.
Best regards, Michael.
