Besides making the output of 'xrdb -q' =20 empty there are still files with default X resources an X client can =20 find and read and apply ... An option would be to activate Kubuntu (KDE instead of GNOME) or =20 Xubuntu (Xfce as Window Manager in a still GTK based environment but =20 less resources hungry). The ldd utility should list which dynamic =20 libraries GNU Emacs actually uses to check whether it's really not =20 depending on/using GTK. Finally you can launch GNU Emacs on a different host and make it =20 display on your local machine. And vice versa. The first test will =20 make *some* GNU Emacs become the client of your local X server, so it =20= should behave (look) like your own GNU Emacs. (If not, then it's due =20 to binding to libraries and different X resources in files.) In the =20 second case, displaying your Ubuntu Emacsen remotely, they should =20 show up like *some* GNU Emacs of that remote machine on that remote =20 machine. If not, then again it's based on libraries and X resources =20 used. You should provide the same fonts on both computers or some X font =20 server. This one might be another cause ... The family of *trace programmes offers the ability to record all =20 files a binary programme opens. -- Mit evolution=E4ren Gr=FC=DFen Pete "Evolution" o __o _o _ =B0\___o /0~ -\<, ^\___ /=3D\\_/-% oo~_______ /\ /\______/ \_________O/ O_______________o=3D=3D=3D>-->O--o___= _
