I want to be prompted for a replacement string for each `l'
in
\begin{tabular}{lrlllcc}
matching p{?cm}.
I tried
M-x replace-regexp <RET> l <RET> p{\?cm} <RET>
but it doesn't work (nor \? only).
Help me!

M-x query-replace ...
will prompt you.
When replacing just a string, no regexp is needed.
Otherwise
M-x query-replace-regexp ...

Indeed!
I was wrong with the keys bindings.
My apologies for the noise.
