I am interested in using the latest spice-mode,
http://spice-mode.4t.com/, released in 2007, but it calls a function
`extent-at'. Is that function deprecated in gnu emacs 23.3 or sooner? Is
there something else I am missing?

This code is specific to XEmacs. Emacs doesn't have extents, it has
overlays instead.

Hi,
reading at their page
In xemacs-21.4.5, you need to install the fsf-compat package to use
spice-mode. In xemacs-21.5 this is not required anymore.
you should not encounter serious compatibilty problems.
Maybe present your example at this list.
