You could use characters from the Box Drawing block in Unicode (U
+2500-U+257F), for example:
──── BOX DRAWINGS LIGHT HORIZONTAL @ U+2500
━━━━ BOX DRAWINGS HEAVY HORIZONTAL @ U+2501
A few fonts have these characters: FreeMono (FreeSans, FreeSerif),
DejaVu Sans Mono, Monospace, Unicode Symbols ...
