I just tested with an Emacs very close to the released version of Emacs 22 and I see no problem. Is there any error messages in the *Messages* buffer? Could you please try starting from emacs -Q and then do M-x load-library YOUR-PATH-TO/nxml/autostart.el and then open the file again?
