You could try using winsav.el, see http://ourcomments.org/Emacs/DL/elisp/. Then try some serialize and de-serialize functions for saving. You have to go through all frames of course. I found some simple routines for serializing here: http://paste.lisp.org/display/39839 If you combine this with desktop.el you may perhaps get what you want.
