I did not like the default font options, so I changed it by adding a
line in the file .Xdefaults : emacs.font: blablabla .
Is it more common to change something like this in the .emacs file ?

I don't know what's most common, but I use .Xdefaults as well, since I
think of Emacs as an X application. But I prefer to set my resources
more generically:
Emacs*Font: blah-blah-blah
